Somma ("Sacred Order of Music Magic and Art) is the brainchild of Italian guitarist/producer Eraldo Bernocchi and of visual artist Petulia Mattioli. It is a “pure” live world music project, which, in its current incarnation, pursues the integration of Tibetan chanting and instrumentation with electronics, dub and electronic jazz. This integration is not mere juxtaposition, arising instead as an integrated live performance, after several prior days of rehearsals. Each Somma performance is therefore a unique event.
23 Wheels of Dharma captures Somma during a live performance in Milan (Teatro Del Verme). This Somma album features Eraldo Bernocchi on guitar, Bill Laswell on bass, Hamid Drake on drums, Nils Petter Molvaer on electrified trumpet, the voice of Raiz, the vocal trio Faraualla from southern Italy and the great vocal experimenter Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, all accompanied by seven Tibetan monks providing vocal and instrumental soundscapes.
